AN IMPROVED NEGATIVE BINOMIAL TO
APPROXIMATE THE PÓLYA DISTRIBUTION

Abstract. This paper gives an improved negative binomial distribution with parameters $r$ and $p$ to approximate the Pólya distribution with parameters $N$, $m$ and $r$, where $p=1-q=\frac{N}{N+m}$. The improved approximation is more accurate than the negative binomial approximation when $N$ is sufficiently large.
