SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE FOR AUTOMATED BACKUP AND RECOVERY OF DISK VOLUMES IN CONTAINERS
Abstract
In the field of IT, virtualization and containerization can be classifiedas solutions for deploying applications and effectively segmenting hardware resources.The two technologies operate in fundamentally different ways. In traditional monolithicapplication environments or even in virtual machines (VMs), the task of data backupand recovery is relatively straightforward. The methods used for full, incremental, ordifferential backup focus on preserving the state of the entire system or virtual machineat a given moment. Containerization is a technology that transforms the way softwareis developed, deployed, and managed. The fundamental idea behind containerizationis encapsulating an application and its dependencies into a self-contained unit called acontainer. This encapsulation allows the application to run consistently and sequen-tially across different computing environments. Traditional backup methods are notaligned with containerized applications. They operate at the system level and lackthe ability to understand the context or importance of the data they backup. How-ever, in a containerized environment where multiple microservices interact and sharedata, understanding the context of the application becomes crucial for their effectiverecovery. The research explores the available methods for backup and recovering incontainerization and proposes a system architecture to automate the backup processin containerized environments.
