CRITICAL ELASTIC COEFFICIENTS IN
THE THEORY OF LIQUID CRYSTALS

Abstract.We consider the estimates of critical elastic coefficients in the theory of liquid crystals. We treat the Landau-de Gennes functional with the Dirichlet boundary condition for the director field and we show that in some case, the minimizer of the functional is a local minimizer which is not a global minimizer. Thus it happens that the hysteresis occurs.
