Abstract. We give explicit conditions equivalent to the existence of a potential function $\phi:\omega\subset\mathbb W\equiv\mathbb R^{2n}\to\mathbb R$ for the intrinsic gradient $\nabla^{\phi}\phi$, introduced by [#!ascv!#],[#!CM!#] and studied in [#!BSC1!#],[#!BSC2!#] to characterize intrinsic regular hypersrfaces in Heisenberg groups.
