Professor Drumi Bainov founded the journal International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IJPAM) in 2002 and he was the Editor-in-Chief until his death on 1st July 2011. During his Editorship the journal has grown and its readership and influence in the community has increased steadily.

Drumi Bainov was a prolific contributor to theory and practice of differential equations, to differential and integral inequalities, to functional differential equations including differential equations with ``maxima'', to impulsive differential equations, to nonlinear systems. Professor Bainov's contributions in mathematical sciences over a period of half a century are well known and well documented throughout the literature. Bainov began his research by applying averaging method to differential equations and continued to explore oscillation theory for various types of delay differential equations, nonlinear differential equations in abstract spaces, impulsive differential equations, impulsive functional differential equations, to name but a few. These resulted in more than 800 publications, including 10 monographs. He has about 50 collaborators from all over the World. Bainov was the main organizer of many International Conferences held in Bulgaria. He served as an Editor-in-Chief of the journals, Communications in Applied Analysis, International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, International Journal of Differential Equations and Applications, International Journal of Computational and Numerical Analysis and Applications and a member of the Editorial Board of 18 international journals.

Bainov was a great researcher and dedicated academic educator and teacher. He had 29 PhD students many of them are recently full professors. He has published several text books, some of them are in use recently.

Professor Bainov was an outstanding leader and a scientific authority, and  he was also a very appreciated and respectful person and will remain in our memories. His guidance and friendship will be unforgettable and it has been our privilege to work with Professor Bainov.
